Honouring Your Rhythms

Honouring Your Rhythms

Honouring Your Rhythms

As an entrepreneur, the saying ‘Festina Lente’ (“Make Haste Slowly”) may seem counter-intuitive, because you’d think the sooner you get things done, put yourself out there on the market, the better it is.

After all, time is money and nobody gets any younger.

With an ever growing list of things to be done, -especially when you have to do them all by yourself — you want results quickly. You’d love to have clients rolling in like… yesterday.

As a consequence, you keep on accelerating your efforts, frantically trying to learn new skills and cover all the bases at the same time.

But too much effort can be self-defeating. You can miss the forest for the trees. You’ll end up in a conflict with yourself, torn between your lack of self-acceptance and the fact that there is only so much a human can do before breaking down.

I love the Daoist concept of “Wu Wei”, or action through inaction. It means non-forcing or non-doing and it refers to cultivating a state in which our actions are effortlessly aligned with the ebb and flow of the cycles of the natural world.

Nature has rhythms — and so do we.

But we ignore ours, unrealistically expecting to ALWAYS be at our best.

Trees aren’t angry, frustrated or disappointed with themselves because they can’t bear fruits in winter.

There’s a time for action and there’s a time for reflection.

When you accept your needs and limitations, you’ll find balance and a new perspective.

And you’ll know when your effort is appropriate and when it would be wasted.

The (Well Disguised) Blessings Of A Burnout

The (Well Disguised) Blessings Of A Burnout

The (Well Disguised) Blessings Of A Burnout

Burnout can damage your health, your career, you personal life.

You might give up on your business, sometimes your family might give up on you.

Although you might try to hide it, its effects are devastating.

And yet, there are (well disguised) blessings to it.

1. – It makes you aware of your priorities – we might think we know them, but mostly we just automatically react to life. We allow ourselves to be led into actions that, upon reflection, we’d rather not take, or at least not as our first option.

2. – it brings a (dramatic) shift in how you perceive the importance of things. Because sometimes when you are too far off, only a radical event can make you re-assess your values.

3. – once the foreign pieces fall off, what’s left is the valuable, rock solid core of your being, of your life. The others’ opinions don’t weight that much anymore. You start listening to what you want and find out who you are.You start trusting your internal radar more.

The land that was burnt is barren and dark for awhile, then it comes back to life and a new set of plants will thrive there.

But… did it really have to burn?

Could there be another (less distructive) way for you to reach a fresh perspective?

Three Questions To Avoid Burnout

Three Questions To Avoid Burnout

Three Questions To Avoid Burnout

When you work very long hours because you love what you’re doing it doesn’t feel like burnout. Because there is curiosity, playfulness and passion there. Yes, you’re exhausted, but you had such a blast your moral is high.

The problem occurs when you get no results – or not the ones you’d like. That’s when exhaustion reaches the mental and emotional levels as well.

It also reaches there when not only you have to do A LOT, but you also don’t like what you’re doing (- or you dread it or downright hate it.) Still you doggedly plod on.

Because “you have to”, “your boss / family / partner / friends/ the community are counting on you”, “it has to be done”, “there’s no one else to do it”, etc.

It’s worth taking a look at the things you’re telling yourself.

Sometimes they are not true. Many times you could find gentler solutions, if you’re willing to see.

Mental exhaustion and overwhelm are harder to catch up in the early stages, but they are even more damaging than the physical one.

Here are three questions worth keeping in the back of your mind when you’re ready to go into the hectic mode:

1. If you disappeared tomorrow, who would deal with this?

2. What are you trying to prove by doing this?

3. Who are you trying to prove it to?

How Do You Know When Enough Is Enough?

How Do You Know When Enough Is Enough?

How Do You Know When Enough Is Enough?

Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion, feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. It can occur after long-term stress in your job, or when you work in a physically or emotionally draining role for a long time.”

Whether you pull the long hours because your boss dumped a load of tasks on you, or you’re a solopreneur doing everything by yourself, results are the same if you do it for a long time.

Everybody can get caught up in this trap. You love to write and enjoy tinkering with the website builder or playing with the software to create audio and video materials. You are passionate about what you do.

But sometimes you get so many ideas you cannot sleep until you put pen on paper (- or fingers on the keyboard). You stay up very late and don’t get enough rest because you wake up excited like a puppy to pick up where you left off. Regaining balance gets harder.

Then effects show up – gradually or with an unexpected crash.

When I suddenly get those overwhelming feelings of helplessness and hopelessness – that’s the red light that tells me I took it too far. That I need to step back, take a break and look after myself.

Does it ever happen to you?

What is your signal to stop?

Shining Your Light

Shining Your Light

Shining Your Light

When I was a child my mother encouraged me to make a notebook of quotes where I’d write down inspiring passages from the books I read.

These days it’s easier to find motivational pieces. Videos and pictures, TEDx conferences – with a touch of a button you can find them any time, day or night.

Which is good, because they are more varied and more accessible.

If you suffer from impostor syndrome though, all this explosion of brilliance is intimidating. You may tell yourself:

  • What else could you add when everything has already been said?
  • How could you find such powerful words that will make you remarkable?
  • Why would people listen?

But you forget how often we pass by valuable ideas without being touched by them. How we ignore pertinent advice, until we really “hear” it. How it can take years before we see the bigger picture.

We understand a life changing truth when we’re ready for it.

Marianne Williamson said:

“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

We all have an inspiring story to tell.

So share yours, because surely there is somebody out there who needs to hear it.

Someone who’s ready for it.
